Integrated Power Electronics Module (IPEM) (2002)
Year: 2002
The integration can greatly help improve the performance, reduce cost and simplify the design process. The top picture in the figure below illustrates two-phase buck VRM using discrete components to power microprocessor. The bottom picture shows a 4-phase buck converter which is of twice the complexity and in fact, in this particular figure, the power devices are integrated in the forms of IPEM and control circuits are integrated in a way that was described earlier. Therefore, two-phase buck converter can be reduced significantly in size and footprint.
