May 28, 2021 - New Research Initiatives
The synergy between CPES and industry depends on regular and thorough input from members. Where CPES provides education of future power electronics leaders and leads exploration of pioneering research ideas, industry helps guide the research topics, keeping the work relevant for consortium companies. The IAB has a unique opportunity to influence CPES research. In fact, the primary role of the IAB is to represent the interests of Industry Members in the CPES research programs as well as advise the CPES director and faculty members on industry trends, key challenges and programmatic matters.
Tom Byrd, IAB Executive Committee co-chair, led a brainstorming session at the IAB Annual Meeting in April 2021 to aid this role. "We are looking for ideas from IAB Representatives that will keep CPES at the forefront of power electronics research and which will be most applicable to members", says Byrd.
To review the discussion, please see the IAB Annual Meeting recording on the IAB webpage and at this link, starting at minute 54.
Topics brought up and discussed at the IAB Meeting included:
- AI for Power â Design, prognostics, and system level operation
- EV Fast Charging Infrastructure â Low cost and Medium Voltage DC
- Pulsed Power and Energy Storage
- Manufacturability and Packaging/Printed Circuit Board Integration
- Topics that Extend Current CPES Work
- Battery Management for System and Distribution
- 2.5/3D Packaging â Need to increase the power and voltages addressed
- Passives â Renew emphasis on exploring new passive materials especially at High Frequency
Your inputs are strongly encouraged!
Please send your thoughts on this list, or additional ideas you might have, to Dennis Grove (dgrove@vt.edu) where they will be shared with CPES faculty and the IAB Executive Committee.
